The Best Fantasy Premier League Players You Didn't Consider

It is pre-season, Fantasy Premier League has ben open for a couple of weeks and you have already put Aguero in, taken him out, put him back in, swapped him for Bony and then ended up with a forward line of Giroud, Kane and Berahino and made 1001 other changes... sound familiar?

The problem is that every other FPL manager is going to choose the top players that you do, and for the most part our winning and losing is done on the players that surround our top players... and more importantly, having the foresight to pick them before everyone else does. Now, of course this is not an easy task... but with a little research and planning we can make some good calculated predictions for top FPL players for 2015/16.  If they come with a sub £7m price tag then all the better.

For the purposes of this article, we will be looking at three players who we think have potential to score plenty of FPL points, will bring differential potential as they will have lower ownership levels and have a sub £7m price tag.

One way of looking at this is to look to the newly promoted teams who might have a Charlie Austin type player (although watch out as Austin might be on his way to Villa or West Brom) and score 15+ goals a season. The obvious players to choose from here would be Matt Ritchie, Calum Wilson and Troy Deeney but with over 20% ownership between them they don't really offer the differential potential that we are looking for. In addition to this, we cannot guarantee their performances in the Premier League.  Having said that, Matt Ritchie would be our favourite pick out of that bunch and if coming anywhere near to replicating his Championship form then he would be a huge asset to your team.

Our Top FPL Alternative Striker Pick: Patrick Bamford

The Chelsea player has just signed a new 3 year deal with the Blues following a more than successful campaign with Middlesbrough on loan last season in The Championship.  He netted 17 times in 34 league appearances and although he only picked up 2 assists his goal tally speaks for itself.

The fact that the current Premier League Champions have just extended the 21 year old's contract is a real statement towards his ability and one that Alan Pardew was quick to act upon by taking him on a season long loan to Crystal Palace. Patrick Bamford is currently only selected by 0.3% of FPL managers and whilst that may increase before the start of the season, a price tag of £6m might be enough to put off most potential suitors.

The alternative in this price range is Berahino who finished last season as the fifth best forward in Fantasy Premier League, but he did not score too many goals under Tony Pulis and it will be a different style of football at The Hawthorns this season.  Crystal Palace on the other hand were rampant under Alan Pardew and had a fantastic final third of the season, with the addition of Cabaye to the midfield there will be plenty of ammunition to allow Bamford to fire.  You read it here first!

Our Second Top Alternative FPL Striker Pick: Jermain Defoe

Jermaine Defoe managed a respectable 61 points in less than half a season with Sunderland last season. For most of those games he was feeding off scraps and playing in a team devoid of any self belief or confidence going forward. If that score was doubled to cater for a full season then he would have been around the top 12 strikers in FPL last season.  Amazingly, he is still only valued at £5.5m which is an absolute steal for a player of international pedigree, proven Premier League goal scoring record and a good chance of game time.

Under Dick Advocaat, Sunderland thrived and avoided relegation in 2014/15 and he seems to have restored the lost belief and more importantly, given Sunderland hope of something better than just aiming to survive.  The new signing of Jeremain Lens is a very good one and Younes Kaboul should also offer more stability to a defence that was suspect last season.

At a whole £1m cheaper than Berahino, we think Defoe is an excellent pick and his inclusion in your FPL squad would allow for two top quality strikers - perhaps Aguero when fully fit?

Our Top FPL Midfielder Pick - Alternative: Tom Cleverley

Our final pick for best alternative choice is ex-Manchester Unite and Aston Villa player Tom Cleverley. Roberto Martinez ruthlessly picked up the England International this summer and with a price tag of just £5.5m and just 1.5% ownership it should be fairly easy to find a spot in your squad for him.

Everton’s passing style of play is more suited to his game that the style he had to play at Villa (particularly under Paul Lambert) and it is easy to see him adding to his tally of 81 points that he scored last season. With Lukaku up top he should be able to add assists to his game and he finished last season strongly chipping in with a few goals. The only negative is that he has joined a squad that is full of decent midfielders but we do think that he will play more often than not – a good squad player!

  1. Ousman Touray

Very interesting and useful information. I was hoping to see a few more players :O but this has helped. It is true that to win you need to be different from the usual trend as copying others will just keep you on their level.
