The opening 6 games of the Premier League: Bournemouth

The return of Fantasy Premier League for 2015/16 this week will mark a flurry of virtual transfer activity as managers try and find the winning formula to be successful in their quest for FPL glory. One of the biggest differentials when competing at the top is the squad depth and in particular being able to pick up some cheaper players who gain points week in week out. We are not necessarily going to unearth the next Harry Kane in this article, but what we are going to do is put the spotlight on three players who have cheap price tags and decent fixtures in the opening 6 games of the Premier League.

Last year’s Championship winners AFC Bournemouth will be one of the teams offering FPL managers the chance to find some bargain players, but many of you will have concerns as to how the south coast club will cope in the Premier League, especially given that they gained promotion with an awfully large number of loaned players who have now returned to their parent clubs. Any team making a foray in to the Premier League for the first time is going to find the transition difficult, but there are three major factors that give Bournemouth a fighting chance:

  • The have one of the brightest young managers in the game in Eddie Howe
  • They have one of the best run of opening 6 fixtures out of any Premier League team
  • They have a playing style suited to the Premier League

The absolute key here though and what helps to minimise the risk for us managers is the opening 6 fixtures for Bournemouth, they are:

Bournemouth Vs. Aston Villa

Liverpool Vs. Bournemouth

West Ham Vs. Bournemouth

Bournemouth Vs. Leicester

Norwich Vs. Bournemouth

Bournemouth Vs. Sunderland

This run of fixtures could potentially see Bournemouth pick up a decent amount of points in their home games and they would fancy something from West Ham and Norwich (away). So – now I have convinced you that you can benefit from a Bournemouth player in your Fantasy Premier League team – who should you go for?

First and foremost, let’s be clear here – we are not going to fill out team with Bournemouth players, you are simply choosing one player who is going to fill a gap in your squad for a low price and whom if required to come in to your first team can do a job for you. We are typically looking at a good £4.5m FPL player.

Cheap FPL defender option: Steve Cook £4.5m

Steve Cook played 4103 minutes of football for Bournemouth last season which is second only to Tommy Elphick who played an additional 10 minutes over the season. He has come up the ranks with Bournemouth since their League One days and he scored 5 goals last season and 3 the season before. He also chipped in with an assist last season and looks a good option in the opening 6 games. Bournemouth tend to have a fairly solid look to their game and don’t just rely on goals to see out games. With Boruc in goal and Sylvain Distin added to the defence, the defenders lacking in Premier League experience around them will have some old heads to keep them in check. At £4.5m Steve Cook could be a very decent squad player.

Cheap FPL midfielder option: Harry Arter £5.0m

Harry Arter scored 9 goals for Bournemouth last season and had 5 assists which is not a bad return for a player rated at £5m. Of course, this is the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether or not he will make the step up. We would prefer the defensive option of Steve Cook but if you need a player to fill a midfield gap then Harry Arter might be a good option.

A player who is a more solid option but would be a starter in your team at £6m is Matt Ritchie. With 17 goals and 15 assists last season, the midfielder would be worth double that price if he could replicate that sort of attacking form in the Premier League this season – slightly risky but this FPL pick has the potential for massive returns!

Cheap FPL striker option: Callum Wilson £5.5m

With 20 goals and 7 assists in the Championship last season, Callum Wilson will be hopeful of a good start in the Premier League. At just 24 years of age we expect him to be a starter in all of these opening games and we expect Bournemouth to score goals this season. They scored 8 goals in their last three games in the Championship and although Wilson is a slightly more expensive £5.5m – this could represent good value and could help you squeeze Aguero and Hazard in to your FPL squad.
