Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 20 Tips:

The football festive fizzle seemed to go a little flat in Gameweek 19 compared to the massive points haul some managers reaped on Boxing Day.  But the New Year will bring with it new hope for Fantasy Premier League managers up and down the country and 2015 sparks off a new month so I thought I would start by looking at a January 2015 FPL tips strategy.

When is the best time to use the wildcard?

This is a question that goes around each year, but the January wildcard transfer window is quite unique.  Many of you will be happy with the general set up of your teams now following the Aguero injury which saw many managers re-invest the cash in bolstering their midfield options.

The big question you need to ask yourself to answer the question of when to use the wildcard is whether or not you plan to bring Aguero back in to your team when he returns to fitness.  He has now dropped down to £12.4m and is unlikely to fall any further and is due to return to full fitness around 20th January 2015.

For me, if you are planning to bring Aguero back then you have to wait to use the wildcard until the middle of January at least.  The other thing to consider of course is how many of your players are going to be heading to the African Cup of Nations.

What FPL Players are heading to the Africa Cup of Nations?

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) takes place between 17th January 2015 and 8th February 2015 which means some players could miss four to five gameweeks.

The following players are all involved in the AFCON:

Clublub Players
Crystal Palace Adlene Guediora (Algeria)

Yannick Bolasie (DR Congo)

Everton Christian Atsu (Ghana)
Hull City Mohamed Diame (Senegal)
Leicester City Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)

Jeff Schlupp (Ghana)

Liverpool Kolo Toure (Ivory Coast)
Manchester City Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)
Newcastle United Mehdi Abeid (Algeria)

Papiss Cisse (Senegal)

Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)

Southampton Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)

Sadio Mane (Senegal)

Stoke City Mame Biram Diouf (Senegal)
Swansea Wilfried Bony (Ivory Coast)
Tottenham Nabil Bentaleb (Algeria)
West Ham United Alex Song (Cameroon)

Cheikhou Kouyate (Senegal)

Diafra Sakho (Senegal)

West Bromwich Albion Youssouf Mulumbu (DR Congo)

Clearly, if you have more than 3 players from this list you will need to either start shipping them out now (one at a time) or use your wildcard to do this before Gameweek 22.  Gameweek 22 would be a good time to use the wildcard if you were thinking of bringing Aguero back in as this would coincide with the AFCON player departures quite nicely.

If you are not planning on bringing Aguero back in then it really shouldn’t matter too much when you play your wildcard, just ensure you are not filling you team with too many AFCON players if you go early.

Gameweek 20 Tips:

Gameweek 20 comes around quickly and we will want to see plenty of points to cure our sore heads on New Year’s Day.  This is where we will be looking:

Aston Villa – Defenders and Goalkeeper

Aston Villa are looking very solid at the back and I was over the moon at the 8 point return from Alan Hutton against Sunderland.  Villa face a Crystal Palace side lacking goals in recent games and I can’t see this one being any different.  I would be looking to have at least one Villa defender and possibly the goal keeper.  They face Leicester in Gameweek 21 and this will be another potential clean sheet so this would be a good investment.

For me, the pick is Alan Hutton as he gets the odd assist.

David Silva – Man City vs. Sunderland

Silva has really stepped it up following his return from injury and with 36 points from the last 3 games it is hardly a genius or unique tip.  But form is everything in Fantasy Premier League and we certainly won’t be ignoring it.

Man City will need to win this game following their slip up against Burnley and Sunderland are looked far less than ordinary at the moment and Silva should be able to pick them apart with another master class display likely from the Spaniard.

Andy Carroll – West Ham vs. West Brom

It remains to be seen whether WBA manager Alan Irvine will still be at the helm on New Year’s Day but he is under pressure for a reason.  WBA have been on a dismal run of late and it is hard to see where they will pick up a result any time soon.  West Ham have had a tough run of fixtures but are about to go on a 3 game stretch against lesser opposition starting in GW20.

Andy Carroll looks sharp at the moment and is clearly Sam Allardyce’s number one choice having played in both games over Christmas.  Andy Carroll can take advantage of West Bromwich’s poor defence at Upton Park and make it a happy day for the Hammers.

Nice tips as usual, already had Guzan and Hutton for a while, got Benteke at the last GW for Bony, no regrets at all.
    My current team:
    GK: DDG, Guzan
DF: Terry, Hutton, Wisdom, Zabaleta, Clyne
MF: Hazard, Downing, Siggy, Eriksen, Sanchez
    FW: Benteke, Rooney, Austin
1m in the bank and 1 FT
    1. I was thinking of leaving the team as it is and have 2FT by GW21 which favours my decision (2) below.
    2. Get Siggy or Downing out for Silva which might mean also downgrading 1 more player to facilitate transfer for 4point hit.
    3. Get Siggy or Downing out for Nasri or Navas
    What do you advice?

I think if you add Silva to that midfield then I think you will be spending too much in just that one area of your team. Spurs have some great fixtures coming up so I would be keeping Eriksen. I would not be comfortable sitting with DDG on the bench at his price – could you keep the 2 FT and then take DDG out next week and use that cash.

As for Navas – he is nowhere near consistent enough for me, if you are going to bring a City player in then Silva is the only choice. I think you are well set for this week – if you are thinking Wildcard for the end of the month then keep the 2FT for next week – you will be glad of it then.
