FPL Game Week 13 Defenders
Top Picks: Game Week 13 Defenders
Sponsored by Premier Punt
We have seen some high profile injuries to defenders already this season and we are only one game week in to November. Luke Shaw’s horror leg break earlier this season was probably the biggest and since then we have also seen Liverpool’s Gomez declared ‘out for the season’ and we are yet to see the likes of Leighton Baines pull on an Everton shirt. Add to this some smaller injuries to key players like Vincent Kompany (who is struggling for fitness once again this week), Phil Jagielka, Hector Bellerin and Chris Smalling then it is no surprise that many managers are looking to shuffle their defensive pack ahead of game week 13.
Let’s take a look the top 3 defensive options for game week 13 with an eye on upcoming fixtures:
Seamus Coleman: £5.9m
Everton have hardly been solid at the back this season and their form has been indifferent, but with Leighton Baines about to return and John Stones impressing again this season Coleman might be afforded a little more attacking freedom. No clean sheets and only one assist this season make it pretty difficult to put him in your team but he has a very good run of fixtures coming up and we fancy Everton to keep a clean sheer against Villa this weekend. A trip to Bournemouth in game week 14 could reap further rewards and he represents a very good differential option with under 9% ownership. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far then you might want to opt for John Stones at £5.5m.
Another player lacking in clean sheets this season is Azpilicueta who was many a manager’s go to Chelsea defender at the start of the season. Valued the same as Seamus Coleman, the Spanish full back could be about to go on an improved run of form (as discussed in our Chelsea Players article) and with a home game against Norwich coming up this weekend only a tough away game at Spurs is between him and another 4 delicious looking fixtures with 4 home games of clean sheet potential. We would hope for at least 2 out of those 4. He is the only Chelsea defender to have played every game this season so his place is pretty assured and he still has the quality to hurt teams going forward. He is our number one choice for the next 6 weeks.
Marcos Rojo: £5.5m
Rojo looked like he had been cast aside at the start of this season and off the field issues with Louis Van Gaal looked to have cost him his place in the starting line up. He has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in the last month and since returning to the side he and Man Utd have picked up 4 clean sheets in as many games. If Rojo keeps his place (as we expect him to) then he offers a good priced alternative to Chris Smalling who does have a slight knock ahead of GW13.
Darmian is the other option but LVG has rested him at times this season and has even hauled him off at half time, a foot injury for Valencia should see him take his place back in the starting line up but Rojo looks the safer option for now.
We will be back tomorrow with the Game Week 13 podcast so make sure you check in for that. In the meantime, we have even more great GW13 content in our members area – for details click here.
