FPL Gameweek 19 Squad Rotation Risks
Squad Rotation Risks for Gameweek 19:
There is no doubting that the Christmas Period is one of the most exciting times of the Premier League season, but part of this excitement stems from the unpredictable nature of squad rotation when managers try to avoid fatigue and injury to their star players
Indeed, the managers of top teams with huge squad depth may resemble a spoilt child on Christmas Day who cannot decide which expensive toy to play with first. In this scenario – the toys being the players, the child being the Premier League manager and us poor FPL managers being the horrified parents looking on.
After a very high scoring Gameweek 18 for many Fantasy Premier League managers, we don’t want to blow it in the last gameweek of December. With this in mind we look at some of the more high profile players who may face the chop or limited game time in the next round of Premier League fixtures.
Robin Van Persie – FPL risk?
RVP has started to turn his season around and almost 7% of players have invested in the huge price tag that comes with one of the EPL’s most consistent performers in previous seasons. LVG has undoubtedly started to eek out the best in the talismanic Dutchman but he is also a player who has been prone to muscle injuries over the years.
RVP played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle and is the wrong side of 30 so to ask him to play the full 90 minutes away to Tottenham is not feasible given the depth of attacking options Man Utd have. Falcao played just 64 minutes at Old Trafford and is looking like he is getting back to fitness so he could feature ahead of RVP at White Hart Lane.
Rooney could of course adopt a more familiar attacking role and LVG has not been shy in playing James Wilson who also got 26 minutes under his belt on Boxing Day. Rooney is one of the players who is almost certain to feature at White Hart Lane and there is also the possibility of a return for Angel Di Maria.
I don’t have RVP in my side, but if I did then I would certainly have my concerns over his starting position in the United starting line up – not something I really want to risk for £12.6m!
Steven Gerrard – A big FPL Squad Rotation Risk
At £8.7m the Liverpool captain is only owned by 3.7% of FPL managers so this will not be a big concern for most, however it is highly unlikely that Gerrard will be able to start the game against Swansea at Anfield given that he completed a tough 90 minutes at Burnley on Boxing Day. Although he does have an extra day to recover compared to the rest of the teams he is still a big concern. For this price there are many other options you could go for – check out our Gameweek 19 Tips here.
Gael Clichy – The Man City Full Back is set for a rest
Clichy played the full 90 minutes at the Hawthorns and hopes of a clean sheet for his FPL owners were dashed with a late conceded goal. This will now be compounded by the fact that Pellegrini will be looking to bring Kolorov back in to replace him against Burnley. The latter played just 26 minutes in the Black Country and will be preferred as a more attacking option against a team that is well drilled defensively.
I would be extremely surprised to see Clichy start this game, in fact – I don’t even think he will be in the squad – time to chop and rotate him yourself?
Romelu Lukaku – Out of form, high ownership and a big potential risk
The big Belgian Forward (just like Everton) is bang out of form at the moment. Martinez has been keen to protect his £27m investment at times this year and it would be no surprise to me if he was to be rested for most or all of this next game against Newcastle. Samuel Eto’o is the obvious risk to his starting place and I would expect to see Martinez go with just one up front in a game that he needs to win and won’t want to risk defensive fragility.
Amazingly, Lukaku (who commands a transfer value of £9.0m) is owned by almost 10% of managers and has only scored two goals in the last nine games! There are much better options up front – if you have him, then now is the time to chop him!
Other potential risks:
Azpilicueta – Chelsea
Oscar – Chelsea
Willian – Chelsea
Sterling – Liverpool
Andy Carroll – West Ham
Berahino – West Brom
