FPL Striker Options Gameweek 23
FPL Striker Options for Gameweek 23
Following a week of FA Cup and League Cup action most Fantasy Premier League managers will be left picking up the pieces and trying to figure out how to reassemble their teams for Gameweek 23. Even the most ardent supporters of Diego Costa would find it hard to justify his actions when stamping on Emre Can during the second leg League Cup tie against Liverpool. Although Costa avoided a red card on the night he has been retrospectively punished for the violent conduct and will now miss games against Man City, Aston Villa and Everton.
All of this comes at a time when millions of FPL managers are questioning whether to bring back Sergio Aguero, who has so far not rekindled the inspired form he was showing prior to his injury.
So the question for many managers this week will be:
Should I drop Diego Costa for Sergio Aguero?
On the face of it, it would seem a natural swap and I for one would not be keen on holding on to a player I paid £10.9m for just for him to sit three games out.
However, I will almost certainly want him back for his return in gameweek 25 when he takes on Burnley at home and then gameweek 26 when he takes on Leicester away. I am in a fortunate position as he is only £0.3m more now and I am banking on lots of players ditching the Spanish striker after me to further reduce his price.
I am not convinced that I want Aguero this week however! I would never have suggested bringing Aguero back in against Chelsea but now my hand will be forced. Aguero would have come back in gameweek 24 for me, but for my other £10m striker. I would assume most others will do the same, but I would rather have an 80% fit Aguero playing away at Chelsea than a Diego Costa who can’t play.
The alternatives to Aguero:
If you are not convinced by Aguero – and that would take some serious nerve – then there are some other options. I will run through my main striker picks for GW23:
Having already tipped Defoe in my Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 23 Tips article earlier this week I would have to stick by the £6m forward as a good option at home to Burnley who have started shipping goals. A decent proposition that would free up some cash if you want to bring Ageuro back in for GW24.
Brendon Rogers confirmed today that Daniel Sturridge is looking "top class" in training and he could be set for a return to the starting line up this weekend. Early adopters could steal a lead on their FPL rivals but this of course brings it's own risks too. Sturridge may not start, he may not score, he will almost definitely not last 90 minutes and he is of course very short of match practice.
The other big stumbling block is the huge £11.1m you will need to stump up for him and the fact they Liverpool embark on some tough fixtures from gameweek 24.
Sturrdige is an option - but he is also a big risk!
Arsenal take on Aston Villa at home this week and Giroud is the only real striking option they have with the departures of Sanogo and Podolski added to the injury of Danny Welbeck. Giroud has started to make some good returns in recent weeks and achieved 8 points in GW22 which would be a good return in this game – something that is more than achievable for the Frenchman.
At just £8.2m and with an ownership of less than 5% Giroud would be a good long term option to replace Diego Costa, then making way in Gameweek 24 for Sergio Aguero – giving the classic ‘2 pricey strikers plus 1 average price’.
Now this is a shout that has probably not been put out there for a few years, but Stoke are playing some decent football this season and scoring plenty of goals in the process. Crouch has had some decent games and scored 64 points so far this season. He is by no means a long term proposition, but playing at home against a weak QPR side it would be no great surprise to see him bag a goal and/or an assist this week.
My top pick out of these would unsurprisingly be Olivier Giroud. You could look at Manchester United players but in their current form I am not backing them until they start looking a little more potent up front. Whatever you decide, good luck and check back on Friday for our captain picks.
