Game Week 17 Captain Picks
Game Week 17 Captain Picks
Sponsored by Premier Punt
Wouldn’t it be lovely to head in to Christmas knowing that you have selected the perfect captain? Well, as a Christmas gift to all of you this week I thought I would make all three captain picks available to all and not just to our premium members – aren’t I kind?
Don’t worry if you are a member as I have something else coming for you this before the weekend so keep any eye out for that.
The game week 17 captain choice is a tough one this week with Arsenal and Man City playing each other (and some saying they will cancel each other out) so we will be assessing the chances in that game but also looking for some captain potential elsewhere. As usual – I will be giving my lowdown on my top 3 captain picks for this week. If you haven’t checked out this weeks early thoughts or the defender picks then make sure you do so – and there is also the game week 17 podcast for you to enjoy.
Arsenal Vs. Man City
A word on this game before I really get in to my top 3 picks for the week. Arsenal have the better of the very recent form but it is pretty even in terms of the Premier League table with Arsenal just edging that. Home advantage for the Gunners means that the onus will be on them to attack but I expect both teams to be doing that. I don’t think this will be one of those top of the table 0-0 bore draws and I expect both defences to be exposed. The City defence is weaker at the moment due to the absent Vincent Kompany but a returning Sergio Aguero will bolster their attack – but it is unlikely that he will play the 90 minutes.
I am not suggesting that you avoid players from this match but I would have a concern over the in-form Giroud who never seems to perform in the biggest games – and this is probably Arsenal’s biggest game of the season so far. If you are chasing people down in your league then you might gamble on Aguero but it is a brave man/woman/beast that does it. The upside of that gamble would mean you have Aguero ready to face Sunderland and Leicester in the two games after Christmas so perhaps you want to bring him in to prepare for that. He is a great differential option – but you will need to weigh up the risk/reward involved.
Captain Pick No. 3: Riyad Mahrez
Leicester fans and probably most FPL managers will be pleased to see that Mahrez has committed himself to Leicester at least for the rest of this season and the man who they signed for just £500,000 last season continued his rich vein of form with a goal and an assist in the Chelsea game. An away trip to Everton is in stall in GW17 and The Toffees have only managed one clean sheet in their last 10 games so goals are on the cards in this game. Mahrez is the main man at Leicester (with the exception of Jamie Vardy) and I fully expect him to be heavily involved in all of Leicester’s attacking play. This is a game where both teams will be trying to outscore each other and a high scoring draw is not out of the question. Mahrez will be a fairly popular pick this week but that shouldn’t put you off.
Captain Pick No. 2: Ighalo – Watford Vs. Liverpool
Liverpool have conceded 4 goals in their last 2 Premier League games and those were to Newcastle and WBA who have hardly been prolific this season. Ighalo on the other hand has scored 3 goals and had 2 assists in his last 3 Premier League games and looks unstoppable. His value has now risen to £6m but this is still a snip – yes the fixtures are becoming more difficult for him but he is more than capable of causing some upset to Liverpool this week.
His form is good, Liverpool’s is iffy and the home advantage will give him a good chance of adding to his already impressive total of 10 goals this season.
Captain Pick No. 1: Romelu Lukaku – Everton Vs. Leicester
I have already expressed my thoughts for this game with goals being very much on the cards. Lukaku is our Podcast guaranteed performer of the week for the second week running (which has never happened before) and he has shown a selfish streak that will send his real life manager crazy but that same trait should please his FPL managers as he adds even more goals to his game.
Lukaku is becoming one of the most popular players in FPL and is now selected by over 51% of teams – a statistic that is reserved for only the finest Premier League players. The only negative of playing Lukaku as captain is that he will probably be the most selected captain in GW17 which if you are chasing a leader will not give you any kind of differential – but he remains the sensible choice.
