Game Week 21 Captain Choice

Sponsored by Premier Punt

Just one round of FA Cup fixtures stands in the way of Fantasy Premier League game week 21 and with the prospect of two days of matches under the evening floodlights I can hardly wait. Yes, it is probably a little premature to be discussing potential captain picks for gameweek 21 but as I have already seen plenty of people discussing it on social media I couldn’t help myself. Fear not, if you want the definitive up the minute GW21 captain tip then just make sure you have signed up to our free weekly email and you will get our pick delivered straight to your inbox on Monday or Tuesday prior to the deadline.

There is plenty to take in to consideration this week when choosing your captain and with a grueling set of FA Cup third round fixtures to play compounded by a very difficult first leg of League Cup semi-finals having been played by Stoke, Liverpool, Everton and Man City – it may pay to look for guaranteed game time this week rather than the out and out fixture. Fans of Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku may want to look elsewhere as these two go head to head for the second time in a week (if they play that is) with doubts over the latter after he limped off on Wednesday night.

Captain Pick No. 3: Harry Kane - Spurs Vs. Leicester

Harry Kane will be a popular pick for captain in game week 21 given that Spurs have the joint fifth best scoring record in the league. Leicester have kept two clean sheets in a row but there is something of a guarantee over Harry Kane’s starting place and when you couple that with lingering doubts over the Foxes defence he becomes a serious contender. Kane has blanked in the last two games but has still scored 3 goals and gained 1 assist in his last 4 games and will have plenty of opportunities against Leicester.

The worry for Kane is that he is carrying the burden of the lone striker at Spurs with pretty much no back-up whatsoever. Last season, he didn’t really feature in the Premier League until November so he has already played a lot more games this season than he had last season and a tough Christmas fixture list followed by a busy January will be cause for concern for the England striker. If you don’t have our number 1 and 2 captain picks in your team and you have Kane then he is a top option… but it may pay to look elsewhere this week.

Captain Pick No. 2: Olivier Giroud – Liverpool Vs. Arsenal

Arsenal head to Anfield on Wednesday night and will be taking on a Liverpool side that has been ripped apart by injuries (something that has been well documented) to their central defenders amongst other key players. Arsenal may well be rejuvenated by a potential return to the team for Alexis Sanchez and if he does return we could see a rest given to Mesut Ozil (especially if the German plays in the Sunderland game at the weekend) which rules him out as a captain pick.

The pick goes to Olivier Giroud who will look to make his aerial presence show against a wounded Liverpool defensive set-up that could be seriously exposed by this slick Arsenal outfit. Theo Walcott is another potential pick here, but I am yet to be convinced by his finishing despite some excellent movement by the England man.

Giroud has already scored 10 goals this season and has gone some way to answering his critics by scoring in big games, all this despite not starting more than a handful of games in the early parts of the season when preference was given to Theo Walcott. Giroud is not usually the type of striker to score a hatful in one game but I will be very surprised if he were not to score or assist against the Reds in this game as Arsenal look to cement their place at the top of the Premier League.
