Game Week 21-23 Cheap Defender Picks

With 6 of the top 10 FPL defenders costing £6m or more the more frugal managers are having to search a little harder for defensive bargains to put in their Fantasy Premier League teams. We look to assess where the January cut price players exist with a particular focus on game week 21 to 23 which will see you through the first month of the year with a few more points in the bank courtesy of potential clean sheets, assists and bonus points.

There are two teams that I am going to focus on that have good fixtures and good opportunities for clean sheets in January – more importantly for us cash strapped managers, they have a plethora of cheap defensive options. Watford and Bournemouth are the two Premier League clubs who could give you some freedom in your transfer kitty if you opt for their defenders and with Watford having a run of 3 back to back clean sheets in December and Bournemouth having 2 clean sheets in their last 3 games, they have some players with excellent potential for January. Let’s take a look at the fixtures first of all:

Bournemouth: West Ham (h), Norwich (h) and Sunderland (a)

On the face of it you would say that Bournemouth have the slightly better fixtures and based on the next two gameweeks being at home for the South Coast club there is an excellent prospect of clean sheets against West Ham and Norwich in particular. Bournemouth seem to be enjoying a renewal of form from their goal keeper Boruc and they were only the second team to prevent Leicester from scoring at home this season.

Watford: Southampton (a), Swansea (a) and Newcastle (h)

Watford have two away games but will not be too worried about any of these fixtures with all of these teams in indifferent form and all 3 of these having struggled for goals at some point this season. Southampton were kept out by Norwich City last weekend and Watford will fancy their chances of avoiding a repeat of the out of the blue 4-0 win for the Saints against Arsenal on Boxing Day. Indeed, if you take that result out of the equation then Southampton had only scored 1 goal in the last 4 games which is hardly terrifying form.

Swansea have had their own problems in front of goal this season and Newcastle are struggling in the relegation zone. The only team to have scored less goals than Swansea and Newcastle is bottom club Aston Villa and it is clear that goal scoring is a major problem for these two.

Which FPL defenders offer the best value?

I am not suggesting for a second that you fill your defenders with players from Bournemouth and Watford, but what I would urge you to consider is to pick one of these players for your FPL team, perhaps two at the most if you want to save even more cash. I have selected the top two defenders from these teams for your consideration.

Allan-Romeo Nyom – Watford - £4.7m

Selected by 6.6% of FPL managers Nyom is already in quite high demand but still represents excellent value. The benefit of Nyom over other Watford defenders is that he is playing almost as a winger in most games and really attacks opposition teams. With Ighalo and Deeney to provide for there is always a good chance of an assist and as we have already stated he will have good opportunities for clean sheets in January.

Adam Smith – Bournemouth - £4.1m

My favourite pick for game week 21 is Bournemouth defender Adam Smith who has impressed in the last 7 games which has seen him have a good run in the team. He has chipped in with 2 goals this season which is particularly pleasing and he has also picked up 6 bonus points in his last 4 games. At just over £4m and an ownership of just 3.1% there is a real opportunity to save money and benefit from this in form defender through the month of January. The added benefit for Adam Smith over Nyom is that the good fixture run continues in to game week 24 with an away game over Crystal Palace who have been struggling to score goals also.
