Game Week 31 Tips: Our First Thoughts
Sponsored by Premier Punt
Whilst the temperature in the UK did actually start to feel a little more Spring like this weekend, there is certainly no doubting that the Premier League title race is definitely hotting up. With Spurs winning at Aston Villa and Harry Kane grabbing the goals (as we predicted) and another fine performance from Dele Alli, it is the turn of Leicester to turn up tonight and return their advantage to 5 points – with the appointment of Rafael Benitez that might not be such a straightforward task as it would have been.
Regardless of the outcome of tonight’s game at the King Power Stadium, Leicester will go in to game week 31 at the top of the Premier League and an away trip to Crystal Palace will represent a good chance for them to stay there. Today we are taking an early look at some tips for gameweek 30 and also the issues surrounding early transfers and preparing your team for the upcoming double game weeks.
Gameweek 31 Picks
With many Fantasy Premier League managers having a lot of players from Spurs, Leicester and Man City as a result of trying to maximise last week’s depleted fixture list there will be the need for a little bit of shuffling required over the next few weeks if those managers want to take advantage of the double game weeks. Although Man City look horrible away from home, I’d advise that you keep those players and a home game against Man Utd shouldn’t be too much of a cause for alarm.
Man City Vs. Man Utd
Man City have the best home form in the league and Man Utd are in disarray, with things likely to get worse for United if they are dumped out of the Europa League at the hands of Liverpool on Thursday night. If they lose to their North West rivals then confidence will be at an all time low and patience will more than likely run out on LVG’s tiresome campaign.
Man City by contrast should be heading in to this derby game having secured Champions League progression and have extra time to prepare for the domestic game and I expect them to win this game comfortably. Aguero had little to feed off against Norwich but looked lively in the opening 25 minutes when City were at their best. The fans will be demanding a response to that dire second half performance last week and I expect them to get it. They look a little more assured at the back now Kompany has re-established his role at the back and a 2-0 win would be my prediction. If City don’t win this game then their title push really is over if it is isn’t already!
Spurs Vs. Bournemouth
Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side have had a resurgence of late and they now look to have done enough to seal their Premier League safety having hit a total of 38 points. This will be a difficult afternoon for the South Coast club and they take on a Spurs side who are going full tilt at the table. Harry Kane is looking very sharp and as long as Pochettino rests his most valuable assets on Thursday against Borussia Dortmund then they should give Bournemouth a reality check. Delle Alli and Harry Kane are just on an incredible run of form and both are must haves in any FPL team until the end of this game week at least.
Things do become tough for Spurs after this week and they don’t have a double game week coming up so you may want to stick with just those two Spurs players, but you certainly need them for GW31.
Swansea Vs. Aston Villa
Our old pal Siggy was a sidetip on last week’s podcast and duly obliged yet again with a goal against Bournemouth. I read a tweet this week from an FPL player who said he would be choosing his captain based on who was playing Villa that week, meaning that he would be giving Sigurdsson the armband this week. Whilst I wouldn’t go as far to say that you must pick your captain based on Villa’s opposition there is some good logic there and Siggy has to be a top pick for GW31. The Swan’s next two fixtures after Villa are Stoke and Chelsea but with 7 goals in his last 11 games there is no doubting that he has returned to form.
Swansea have everything to play for given their league position but should just about be okay if they win this game. I expect them to go all out to ensure that is the case and I cannot think of anything positive to say about Villa who will pretty much seal their relegation with defeat at the Liberty Stadium.
Everton Vs. Arsenal
Arsenal have won only one of their last four Premier League games and they have also endured a mass of domestic and European cup disappointment in that time too. Everton were so much improved in every area against Chelsea in the FA Cup at the weekend and will fancy their chances against a wounded Arsenal side. Wenger is another manager who must secure a win to keep the title challenge alive but I don’t see them doing it against the attacking prowess of Everton if they can keep solid at the back again.
Lukaku is another must have Premier League striker and is in red hot form. Whilst he frustrates with wasted opportunities on a regular basis, he gets enough chances to ensure he also scores regularly. With the double-double game week’s coming up for Everton he simply has to be in your squad and I believe he will score at least one against Arsenal this weekend.
Crystal Palace Vs. Leicester City
This game is not an easy one for Leicester who travel to play a Crystal Palace side who are in pretty poor form themselves. They won in the FA Cup and looked a little better in that game and I see this being a tight affair that could well end in a draw. This is where we find out exactly what Leicester are made of as the expectation is now on them to keep winning, a pressure they have seldom had.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are the key players as always and I will be sticking to my Riyad Mahrez only shout. I think Vardy is hard to put ahead of Aguero, Lukaku and Kane right now and I would prefer them this week to the join leading scorer Vardy.
