Game Week 9 Captain Tips
Game Week 9 Captain Picks
In association with Premier Punt
The teams at the top of the Premier League enjoyed somewhat differing fortunes in Europe this week with Man City getting an absolute thumping at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night whilst Arsenal hit Ludogorets for 6 in a game at the Emirates that they strolled through with ease. Spurs were held in a goalless draw in Germany when they were reliant on their goalkeeper’s heroics to avoid defeat and Man Utd ran out comfortable winners on Thursday when they took on Fenerbahce at Old Trafford. Southampton were defeated in Italy when they shuffled much of their pack and Leicester continued their European dream with a win in Copenhagen.
As much as the European games are a pointer as to the most recent form, the midweek games cannot be relied on solely and those results should be taken with a pinch of cautionary salt.
With plenty to consider, the game week 9 captain choice is a difficult as ever to select – we are giving you our top 3 picks for GW9 right here:
GW9 Captain Pick No. 3: Philippe Coutinho
Liverpool were halted by Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United brick wall on Monday but another home game (this time against West Brom) represents a good chance to show us why we have all been so excited by them so far this season. West Brom can create brick walls of their own but without the suspended Jonny Evans they could be a little more vulnerable.
Coutinho was the one player who tried to get the Reds ticking on Monday night and although he has had a couple of disappointing games in terms of FPL points it is often fine margins that determine his success – there is no guarantee when it comes to picking captains and this one certainly does come with some risk – but the rewards could be big.
GW9 Captain Pick No. 2: Romelu Lukaku
There aren’t many strikers in the Premier League right now that are in better form than Romelu Lukaku and taking on Burnley away from home will probably feel much easier than their exploits at Man City last week. That being said, expect Burnley to shut up shop – but if Everton get the first goal then this game could open up and give the Belgian marksman a great opportunity to add to his 50 Fantasy Premier League points that he has already accrued.
Diego Costa is the one striker with similar form to Lukaku but as he takes on the Mourinho masterclass of football wrecking on Sunday, the Everton player probably represents a much better bet.
GW9 Captain Pick No. 1: Alexis Sanchez
Arsenal look like the key team to back in game week 9 with a home game against Middlesbrough who have had differing fortunes so far this season. There are plenty of Arsenal players to choose from and the main contenders are Sanchez, Ozil and Theo Walcott.
Walcott has been the most consistent so far this season but is due a rest soon surely and he still misses more chances than he scores. Ozil has been bubbling away with some solid performances and scored a hat-trick in midweek which will tempt many managers to move for him. But the pick for me this week is Sanchez – he is the one world class player at Arsenal and his class will show through over the course of the season – and he still represents the best captain pick this week. All three of these players scored in midweek so if you only have one of them then you should probably opt for the one you have.
