Gameweek 23 Captain Picks
Gameweek 23 Captain Picks
We all know by now that Gameweek 23 has been thrown in to turmoil with the injury to Alexis Sanchez and the 3 game ban for Diego Costa. With Sanchez being most managers Fantasy Premier League captain choice for Gameweek 23, the simple captain decision just became a whole lot harder.
It may well be that in GW23 we now need to look for the less obvious choices to gain maximum captain points.
Giroud vs. Cazorla as Captain Picks?
Let’s start off with the obvious captain choice in Olivier Giroud. Giroud looks set to have an ownership explosion this week and with Arsenal facing Aston Villa at home it is easy to see why. With him being the main goal scoring threat without Alexis Sanchez he is the obvious choice this week and I predict he will be the most popular captain pick this week.
Another Arsenal player who would be a good choice (particularly given the injury to Sanchez) is Santi Cazorla. At just £8.3m and fresh off the back of a 14 point haul he could be set to reward his backers. He should be guaranteed a starting berth given the midfield injuries to the likes of Arteta and Wilshere and his performances of late have certainly made us sit up and take note.
Other Good Captain Choices for Gameweek 23:
So where else should we be looking this week? This first thing I would do is rule out the Chelsea and Man City players. With Cesc Fabregas looking like a doubt and Diego Costa out, it looks set to be a standard Jose Mourinho defensive task in a game that City have to take to Chelsea.
Can Aguero score? Of course he can!
Will Aguero score against Chelsea? Quite possibly – let’s not forget the performance against Bayern Munich! But… and this is a big but… Aguero is not currently in form. For me, gameweek 24 is the time to bring Aguero back, and gameweek 23 is NOT the week to captain him! He could make me eat my words, but I will be steering away from the Argentinian this week.
The potential return of Daniel Sturridge to the Liverpool line-up should see them continue their run of good form, and whilst I would not be happy to throw Sturridge straight back in to my Fantasy Football team I welcome the injection of pace and the positive impact this could have on Sterling who has looked sharp in the last few games. West Ham will not be an easy nut to crack, but if anyone in the Liverpool team can do it then it is their top points scorer.
If you can score past Chelsea then you can score past anyone – a very good proposition and one that many players won’t have the balls to choose.
A whopping 30% of you have Bertrand in your Fantasy Premier League team and although we don’t usually try and bank on clean sheets I like the JP shout on the PODCAST of Ryan Bertrand and the chances of Southampton keeping a clean sheet at home to a Bonyless Swansea City.
Southampton have recaptured their early season form and I predict a home win and the Southampton man already has 10 clean sheets, 2 goals and 2 assists to his name this season and we expect him to add to this tally here. Now of course, this won’t give massive points back unless he scores, but a return of 6-8 points would be decent once doubled.
Manchester United Roulette:
If ever there was a home fixture where you would bank on Manchester United scoring a few goals then this would be it. However, they have hardly looked convincing of late and although they sit in fourth place in the Premier League, the system and style of play is not anywhere near where the fans and pundits feel it should be.
Having said that, I have to believe that United will score at least 2-3 goals in this game and if they do there could be points to be had for the likes of RVP, Wayne Rooney and Di Maria. Will Falcao play or will he sit it out again? This is a must win game for LVG given the precarious nature of the points in 3rd to 5th spot in the league.
If I were to choose any player from United to get the points it would be Di Maria – he still has bags of quality and now has something to prove and will want to silence his doubters.
Di Maria would be a risk – but a risk that could pay off big time!
