What to look for in a horse for the Grand National
What makes his race so special is how unique it is. The distance, the fences, the occasion, the twists and turns and the number of runners. On this basis, most of our usual pointers when picking a horse go out of the window.
Age of the horse:
The age of the horse is important, statistically speaking – you should be looking for a horse aged between 9 and 11 as they have had the most success over the years.
Weight of the horse:
You do not want a horse that is carrying anything more than 11st 3lb as only 2 horses in history have won the National carrying more than this.
Horses with previous runs:
First time out runners at Aintree are not a good bet, you should be looking for a horse that has run at Aintree before and fared well. Aintree is a unique course and some horses just don’t take to it.
Our top tips for the Grand National:
Soll – 20/1
Soll finished a creditable 7th last year and one place better this year will see him in place money with our Bet Victor offer. He has had two runs for his new trainer and he won both of those so he comes here in good form having had a rest since February. David Pipe looks like he has had primed him for this race and the fact that he ran the course so well last year offers a lot of hope for improvement this in the 2015 renewal. At 10st 2lb he is our number one pick for the race.
Night In Milan – 20/1
If we were to have a second punt it would be on this highly rated 9 year old who runs of a decent weight of 10st 9lb. He comes here in good form having placed in his last 3 runs and is another who looks geared up for this race.
My Gran’s Tip:
My dear old Gran usually does pretty well at this game and she has picked Court By Surprise at a whopping 33/1. She said she likes the name as it is a funny play on words, plus she was unexpectedly in court last month due to an unpaid bill. On the serious side, the horse has won the last 2 races, ticks our age and weight boxes and has showed some good staying form.
