Have Chelsea Turned The Corner?

In one of the strangest Premier League seasons since Eric Cantona’s famous Kung-Fu kick perhaps the biggest surprise is not the brilliant performance of Leicester City but the massive underachievement shown by Chelsea. The sacking of Jose Mourinho and re-appointment of Guus Hiddink is something that no-one would have predicted but could that last minute equaliser against Man Utd last weekend spark a revival to the Chelsea of old?

With Chelsea being relatively safe from the fear of relegation they will certainly be looking up the table rather than down and they are only 11 points off fifth placed Manchester United – something that is perhaps more a pointer towards the general underperformance of top sides this season. The 16 point gap to Man City in fourth place is pretty much unattainable so the question really has to be whether you would want to invest your FPL money in a team that clearly has very little to play for other than pride in what has been a very difficult season?

Eden Hazard is the one Chelsea player who is an absolute no-no right now (mainly due to his price) as he is struggling to hold down a first team starting place, but the likes of Diego Costa who has scored 4 goals in his last 6 games look a pretty good option with fixtures against Newcastle, Southampton and Norwich to come in the next 3 game weeks. Game Week 27 sees the visit of Newcastle to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea will be keen to get a good result against a Newcastle side that has been somewhat inconsistent of late. It will be interesting to see if Gary Cahill is the preferred replacement to Zouma but at £6.1m I can’t see people rushing to put him in for GW27.

Searching For Differential

The search for those elusive differential points could prove fruitful if you opt for Chelsea players as many other FPL managers are still all over the cheap midfield and attacking options (quite rightly too) but with just 6.8% of teams having Diego Costa and just 8.7% having Willian (who has been arguably their best player this season) they could be options that reward the brave.

The concern has to be whether or not Chelsea players have the fire in their bellies to really have a go and make the most of a bad season. It may also be that the owners will want to avoid a grueling Europa Cup campaign next season and rather invest their time and efforts in rebuilding a Premiership title challenge next season. Chelsea do have some very winnable fixtures left though so although I wouldn’t suggest that you run out and fill your team with Chelsea players it could be rewarding to have one or maybe a maximum of two Blues in your team.
